How to reduce waste

There are many ways that we can easily reduce the amount of household waste that we produce:

  SMART SHOPPING

On average...

  • 28% of our bin is food waste
  • every person throws away £424 of food every year!*

Make a list of what you need before you go shopping and try not to over cook. Don't forget to compost your vegetable peelings.

  JUNK MAIL
On average each household receives 224 pieces of junk mail each year. Cut down this unwanted junk mail by contacting the Mailing Preference Service - click here for more information.

  COMPOST
Make use of all your vegetable peelings and garden waste by composting it. This can be done through buying or making your own compost bin, taking the waste to your local Household Waste Recycling Centre, or signing up to your local District Council's garden waste collection service (where available). For more on compost, including information about how to purchase cut priced compost bins, click here.

  REUSE

Rather than throwing unwanted things away, see if they can be reused instead. Many charity shops will accept a wide range of materials, from clothes to furniture. You can also contact your local furniture reuse group, who will collect unwanted furniture that is in a reasonable condition so that it can be reused - click here for more information.

There are lots of other ways to reduce waste, check out the Top Tips - where you can leave your top tip! - and the A to Z of recycling pages.

For information about Waste Exchanges - where you can swap items that you no longer want - go to the links page and look under "Waste Exchange".
