Somerset Waste Partnership thanks local people for excellent recycling effort
In 2009/10 around a tonne of waste was collected for every household in the county, and almost half of that was recycled. Energy and emissions saved as a result were equal to taking 28,500 cars off our roads.
“Every tonne of waste avoided and recycled saves council tax payers money and helps the environment. When all costs are taken into account, that saving was £2 million last year alone. People in Somerset are doing well and I want to take this opportunity to thank them,” said Steve Read, Managing Director of Somerset Waste Partnership. “Landfill costs are £68 per tonne now and will rise to over £100 per tonne by 2014 so the more we recycle the less it will cost us as council tax payers.”
