Recycling Banks to go as kerbside services improve
SORT IT PLUS kerbside collections of plastic bottles and cardboard started in a further 20,800 households over the past two weeks and will be available to all households by the end of September. Continuing to maintain recycling banks for the same materials means more and more households are effectively paying twice for the same service.
Recycling banks used to make a significant contribution to recycling in the Borough but, as kerbside services have improved, that contribution has tailed off significantly. Now recycling banks contribute just 2% of all materials recycled locally and that figure is set to drop with the continuing roll out of SORT IT PLUS.
“In an ideal world we would have maintained recycling banks for plastic bottles and cardboard until after the full roll-out of SORT IT PLUS, but we have to recognise the pressure Taunton Deane Borough Council and local council tax payers are under. Fortunately the roll out is moving ahead rapidly and the removal of the banks will only be a short-term inconvenience.” Explained Steve Read, Managing Director of Somerset Waste Partnership.
Taunton Deane’s remaining recycling banks will be removed by Friday 7th May. Somerset’s 18 Recycling centres, including the sites in Priorswood and Poole, will continue to take the full range of materials, opening from 9am to 7pm seven days a week.
