SORT IT PLUS award winning recycling service to go county wide – confirmed!
SORT IT PLUS adds plastic bottle and cardboard collections to the SORT IT service operating in Taunton Deane, Mendip and South Somerset. It is already scheduled to roll out in Taunton Deane and Sedgemoor this year. The service will then be introduced across Mendip and South Somerset by May next year and will go county wide by rolling out across West Somerset by April 2012. This has all been made possible by a new funding agreement between the partner authorities.
The financial arrangements have been carefully constructed to unlock funding and cut costs for council tax payers. A minority of finances for one district have been underwritten by the other five partner councils in the Somerset Waste Partnership. This allows the service to go county wide, attracting additional support from Somerset County Council and enabling contractor May Gurney to provide a far more competitive rate for running collections.
“Investing in new services is a rare thing in these challenging economic times and it’s a great tribute to all those involved that we’re able to make this happen. The arrangement we now have has used a small amount of support to unlock ten times as much in discounts and other contributions. In the medium and long term recycling will be the most cost effective and environmentally sustainable way of dealing with the things we discard. SORT IT PLUS should see Somerset’s recycling rate rise to 60%, well about the national average of 38%.” Said Steve Read, Managing Director of Somerset Waste Partnership.
