Please recycle after Christmas
Somerset Waste Partnership are reminding everyone to remember to round off the festive season by recycling as much as possible. Despite some gloomy predictions about falling prices, it’s still very much business as usual for recycling in Somerset where recycled materials continue to find good markets.
So with Christmas flying by so quickly it is important to think of those small extra things you can do to recycle more of your waste. Here are a few ideas: -
• Take old Christmas trees to your local Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC), where they will be sent on to be composted into soil improver for local gardeners and farmers. HWRCs also have facilities for recycling cardboard, household batteries and mobile phones (proceeds from mobile phones go to a Somerset based hospice for terminally ill children).
• If you’re a gardener you can home compost vegetables and fruit that can no longer be eaten.
• If you find yourself with unwanted gifts or you’re wondering what to do with old items that have been replaced by new ones, then there are several options for you. Consider your local charity shop or furniture reuse group (see details below). There is also www.uk.freecycle.org , an easy online way of finding a new home in your local community for items that have lots of life left in them.
• Save gift wrap and ribbons for next year and look out for charity collection points for old Christmas cards at many local supermarkets. Wrapping paper can contain plastic and metal so cannot be taken with other paper in your kerbside collection. Reusing it saves money and is even better for the environment.
• Glass bottles and jars can go in your recycling box.
Please do not leave packaging for larger gifts and electrical items outside your house – they can be a signal to burglars.
Finally don’t forget to reduce, reuse and recycle when you make your new year’s resolutions - you might consider cutting down on food waste or thinking about packaging when you make a purchase.
