Subsidised service recycles 2 500 tonnes in Sedgemoor
With the autumn gardening ‘rush’ starting and gardeners tidying up their gardens for the winter, recyclers in Sedgemoor have already managed to recycle over 2,500 tonnes of green garden waste this year through garden waste collections.
This recycling method saves biodegradable waste being put into landfill where it rots under cover and releases methane, a climate change gas 23 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Instead it is composted and put to good use helping gardeners in Somerset and beyond. Recycling garden waste makes a valuable contribution to caring for the environment.
Cllr Stuart Kingham, Sedgemoor District portfolio holder and Somerset Waste Board member explained: “People often make the mistake of thinking it’s ok to put organic materials in landfill. In fact garden waste needs air to break down productively and compost. If there’s no oxygen, as is the case if it’s buried in a landfill site, it produces very damaging pollutants.”
The latest consignment of garden waste bins is expected shortly at our depot ready for despatch to new customers of this important service.
The cost to Sedgemoor District Council of this service for each participating household works out at £44 per year, plus the cost of the bin. However the current charge to Sedgemoor District Council’s customers is just £25 per year - a subsidy to each user of the service of £19.

Other ways of recycling green garden waste include:
• Composting at home. It saves money and provides a great resource for your garden. Compost bins are available from www.somersetwaste.gov.uk from just £17 including delivery.
• Taking green waste to any of the household waste recycling centres at Saltlands; Middlezoy; Highbridge
• Purchasing green waste sacks at £1 a bag (in packs of 10)
