Somerset Waste Partnership shortlisted for national recycling award

The National Recycling Awards, co-ordinated by the Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC), are considered to be the Oscars of the recycling world. Now, following a year of impressive results, Somerset Waste Partnership is in the running for the Asda sponsored award for “Recycling Target Success”.

Nigel Woollcombe-Adams, Chair of Somerset Waste Board explained why this was important: “Last year Somerset became one of the first counties in the UK to break the 50% barrier and recycle more than we sent to landfill. This nomination recognises the hard work and professionalism of the SWP team in helping that happen. More than that though, it recognises the concern the vast majority of people in Somerset have for the environment and the effort they have made to get us to this point. We’re well ahead of the national target of recycling 40% by 2010 and, while there’s still a great deal more to be done, this is recognition of an excellent county-wide performance.”

Somerset Waste Partnership's recycling target success has been underpinned by:
Somerset local authorities working together to promote waste reduction, reuse and recycling;
Somerset being the first to identity the potential of large-scale food waste collections; and
Redesigning Household Waste Recycling Centres and improving recycling facilities.

The award ceremony will take place at the 2008 LARAC conference, which will be held in Telford on 12th/13th November.

Somerset Waste Partnership previously won a National Recycling Award in 2005 for the introduction of the SORT IT collections in Mendip, South Somerset and Taunton Deane.
