Autumn rush for garden waste green bins
With the nights drawing in and autumnal garden ‘tidy-ups’ happening across the county, Somerset Waste Partnership has been pleased to see a rush to recycle garden waste. The demand has been so great that the garden waste collection service has temporarily run out of green “wheelie bins”!
Residents who have already placed orders for the service will be given compostable garden waste sacks to tide them over until new bins arrive. New applicants will be placed on a waiting list, with fresh supplies of green bins expected in November.
Increased demand for wheeled bins in Europe has also delayed fresh supplies.
Councillor Stuart Kingham, member of the Somerset Waste Board and portfolio holder for Environmental Support on Sedgemoor District Council said “Along with our contractor ECT, we apologise to those who are waiting for a green bin, but equally we are very pleased that so many people realise the benefits of composting and recycling generally. Sedgemoor District Council, along with Somerset Waste Partnership are doing all they can to get more bins as quickly as possible.”
Somerset Waste Partnership also promotes home composting as an alternative to garden waste collections, with cut price offers currently starting at £17 (including delivery) from www.somersetwaste.gov.uk and click on composting.
“In many ways home composting is the best option,” added Councillor Kingham. “It minimises costs and environmental impact and provides a great resource for any gardener. Alternatively garden waste can be taken to any of the Household Waste Recycling Centres in the county.”
