Misuse forces removal of recycling banks
Somerset Waste Partnership has been forced to take action to remove some recycling banks following abuse of the facilities at Tesco Superstore in Chard.
Following complaints from local residents about rubbish being fly tipped around the site, the decision has been taken to remove banks for paper, glass bottles and jars, and food and drink cans from the site. All these material can be recycled with kerbside collections and the site can still be used to drop off plastic bottles.
Cllr Paull Robathan, South Somerset District Councillor, and Somerset Waste Board member explained. “South Somerset has one of the highest recycling rates in the country and that’s something we are rightly proud of. We’ve looked at the banks and taken into account the fact that many materials can be recycled with kerbside collections. It’s a shame that the actions of a minority have forced us into this position but the vast majority of responsible people do make a difference and I would like to thank them for their efforts.”
Recycling bank facilities are available at the Essex Road car park in Chard and at the Chaffcombe Road Household Waste Recycling Centre.
Plans for a new household waste recycling facility in the town took a big step forward this month with the announcement that the site, near Beeching Close, has been purchased.
