Chard - Former sewage works to become community recycling facility - and more
Plans to create new community recycling facilities in Chard took a big step forward this week with the acquisition of the site - a former sewage treatment works. The brownfield site, off Beeching Close, has been purchased by Somerset County Council for the project which is being managed by Somerset Waste Partnership. Plans for the site include a modern Household Waste Recycling Centre to replace the current Chaffcombe site, as well as space for small industrial units and a large green space for the community.
Rob Kidson, project manager for Somerset Waste Partnership explained: “The site sits between houses, an industrial area and a nature reserve. This will be the perfect development to join them up. Instead of a fairly run down piece of land the local community gains a much needed recycling facility, industrial units to support job creation, and local houses will have a community greenfield site to buffer them from the development.” The development follows a long period of consultation with the community, stretching back over three years. “It has been a lot of work but it will pay off in many ways,” added Hazel Prior-Sankey, Vice-Chair of the Somerset Waste Board and County Environment Portfolio Holder. “Chard will gain a site that will boost the local economy and environment. The plans include better transport links, with improved cycle tracks that can be used both by commuters and people out on a Sunday ride. This scope is something new for Household Waste Recycling Centres and I’m pleased we can get on with it.” Work is now ongoing to select and appoint a development contractor. Decisions on that are expected in a few weeks.
