Somerset students celebrate success at 2008 SWAP awards
Students from across Somerset gathered at Taunton’s Genesis Centre for the Somerset Waste Action Programme (SWAP) awards on Thursday 10th July.
The SWAP team run popular environmental and waste reduction education programmes across Somerset. The 2008 SWAP awards celebrated achievement in four categories: -
• Best Energy Project • Recycling Champions • Best Film • Best Waste Project
And the entries were widely agreed to be of a very high standard, ranging in scope from one which petitioned Gordon Brown for a change in national policy (Countess Gytha Primary School) to one which developed an environmentally friendly maintenance policy for their class hamster (Baltonsborough CEVC Primary School).
“We’ve been running the awards for a few years now and I think this was the best yet.” Said Rupert Farthing, SWAP team leader and organiser of the SWAP awards. “Not only are we seeing schools changing structurally and culturally to become more environmentally friendly, but these projects show it’s students of all ages who are pushing the agenda. It’s very encouraging for the SWAP team and a real demonstration of pupil power.”
The awards were presented by Steve Read, Managing Director of Somerset Waste Partnership and Cllr Hazel Prior-Sankey, Vice Chair of the Somerset Waste Board.
“It was a pleasure to be a part of this event and inspiring to see these important practices being picked up and put into action in so many innovative ways by so many young people. I’m sure if anyone still doubts the critical importance of waste reduction and recycling, they would have had a change of heart had they been here today.” Said Steve Read.
The results were as follows: -
Best Energy Project Winner – Bruton School for Girls Runner Up – Upton Noble CE Primary School
Recycling Champions Winner – Countess Gytha Primary School Runners Up – Baltonsborough CEVC Primary School; Brymore School
Best Film Winner – Beech Grove Primary School Runners Up - Upton Noble CE Primary School; Trull CEVA Primary School
Best Waste Project Winner – Ashcott Primary School Runners Up – Bishop’s Hull Primary School; Ansford School
