Plastic bottle and cardboard recycling trials to
Trials for plastic bottle and cardboard collections are to be launched soon in Mendip. Collection containers and service leaflets will be delivered by the Somerset Waste Partnership to all residents on the trials during the week commencing 12th May.
For the trials, residents will receive a new green box for cardboard and plastic bottles, designed to stack neatly on the existing green box that households already have to recycle their paper, glass, food and drinks cans, foil, clothes, shoes and car batteries.
The first SORT IT PLUS trial collections in Mendip will start on 19th May. The trial rounds will be in Chilcompton, Kilmersdon & Mells, Oakfield Road area in Street and Welsford Avenue area in Wells.
“The SORT IT PLUS trials will build on the success of current recycling collections in Somerset, by testing new service options and new collection vehicle designs. It’s important local residents covered by the trials understand the new system, so all will be sent a service leaflet to explain the trial arrangements and we will hold roadshows to answer questions face to face,” explained Councillor Nigel Woollcombe-Adams, Chair of Somerset Waste Partnership.
Councillor Alastair Glanville, Mendip District Council’s Street and Landscape Portfolio Holder, added: “This is something local people are interested in. I’m pleased the trials will be starting and look forward to seeing the results so we can effectively plan future collections of recyclables across Mendip.”
SORT IT PLUS roadshows for the trial areas will be held on Saturday 17th May as follows: - 11:30 – 13:00 The Somerset Wagon Car Park Broadway, Chilcompton, BA3 4JW 14:00 – 15:30 Wells Leisure Centre Charter Way, Wells BA5 2FB
The SORT IT PLUS trials will run from May until March 2009 and involve collection of cardboard and plastic in addition to existing collection services, consisting of: - • Weekly collections of food waste; • Continued recycling collections for paper, glass, cans, foil, clothes, shoes and car batteries; • Fortnightly collections for refuse; • Optional charged composting collections for garden waste.
Households who are part of the trials will all receive notification leaflets and a second recycling box. Refuse and recycling collection arrangements in other areas will not be affected and will continue as usual.
