Boost for Recycling in Sedgemoor: Trials to be Launched for Food Waste, Plastic Bottles and Cardboard

Trials for new waste and recycling collections are to be launched in Sedgemoor by the Somerset Waste Partnership in May. The trials will involve home collections for food waste, plastic bottles and cardboard and build on the successful SORT IT collections already provided in other parts of Somerset.

Councillor Nigel Woollcombe-Adams, Chair of the Somerset Waste Partnership said: “The trials will cover a total of about 10,000 households throughout Somerset, including four rounds in Sedgemoor. We will be testing new approaches to collecting a wide range of materials for recycling and composting, which will involve comparing different service options and testing innovative new collection vehicle designs.”

Councillor Stuart Kingham, Sedgemoor District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environmental Health & Clean Surroundings, said, “We are very pleased to be involved in these trials, which we expect will allow a recycling rate of at least 50% - twice that currently achieved in Sedgemoor. The trials will run from this May to April next year. At the end of this period, decisions will be taken about continuing the new arrangements and, if affordable, extending the best collection options to other areas.”

The SORT IT PLUS trials will involve:
• Weekly collections of food waste, with an internal caddy and external bin with lockable handle provided;
• Continued recycling collections with a box provided for paper, glass, cans, foil, textiles and car batteries;
• An additional stackable recycling box provided for plastic bottles and cardboard;
• Fortnightly collections for refuse with wheeled bins provided for all suitable households;
• Optional charged composting collections for garden waste.

The new collections will allow more than twice as much waste to be recycled as currently in Sedgemoor, and should halve the amount of refuse sent to landfill. Cllr Nigel Woollcombe-Adams said: “This will benefit our environment by conserving resources, reducing pollution and saving energy. It will also help avoid rising costs of waste disposal.”

Notification packs will be delivered to all residents on the trial rounds shortly, which will include details of the new collections and for local roadshows, where the new collection bins can be viewed. Bins and boxes for the new collections will be delivered in early May and the trials will start week commencing 19th May 2008.
