Want to compost your food waste at home?
Three of the District Councils in Somerset collect food waste from the kerbside - click here for more information - but if you'd like to compost your food waste at home then you can do so by using a "Green Cone".
A green cone is a sealed unit where you can put all your food waste, both cooked and uncooked, which is then broken down through a composting process. Click here to be directed to the Green Cones website, which provides further information on green cones, as well as an on-line purchasing system.

Garden waste collections
Some local council's provide a fortnightly garden organic
waste collection service direct from your property. Residents
can purchase paper sacks, or hire a wheelie bin to store
their material between collections. The service is available
all year, and the compost that is produced
is available to purchase at a competitive rate, and is an
environmentally sound use of garden waste. For more information
contact your local Recycling Officer. If your local council
does not have such a service, all the Household Waste Recycling
Centres have separate containers for garden waste.
Buying soil improver made from recycled green waste
The green waste that is taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centres is taken away and composted by Viridor Waste Management. The resulting soil improver can be purchased from the Household Waste Recycling Centres in 40 litre bags. It can also be bought in bulk direct from Viridor Waste Management, for more information please contact Viridor on 01963 351725 or email - click here.
