The Somerset Waste Partnership has been working since 1992; the partner authorities
are Somerset County Council, Sedgemoor, South Somerset,
Mendip and West Somerset District Councils, and Taunton
Deane Borough Council.
In October 2007, Somerset became the first countywide area to combine waste service functions under a single joint committee of Councillors from all Somerset local authorities. Previously, the District and Borough Councils collected household waste, whilst Somerset County Council managed the waste disposal and the Household Waste Recycling Centres.
The Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP) will manage waste collection, recycling and disposal services for all 228,000 Somerset homes, aiming to increase recycling levels to 50 per cent and beyond and to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
Moving to the new Somerset Waste Partnership is a big step towards improving and harmonising recycling and waste services across Somerset, helping to remove confusion over what services are provided where, not to mention making significant efficiency savings through working as a partnership.
The Partnership will take over the responsibility of recycling and waste collection and disposal, and we will work to expand the recycling options for the public, in order to continue the growing recycling rate in the County and exceed 50 per cent recycling.
Members of the public with queries about their recycling and waste collections can continue to contact their local council’s Customer Services Centre.
