Waste Collections in Sedgemoor

In Sedgemoor the new SORT IT PLUS recycling service will be phased in during the course of 2010. Click here for SORT IT PLUS in Sedgemoor information.

If you are new to the area and want to know about the full range of recycling and refuse services in Sedgemoor, click here for your "Household Recycling and Refuse Services Guide".

For households yet to join SORT IT PLUS there are two main recycling collection services. One is for 'dry' recyclable material (cans, paper etc), via a kerbside recycling box; the other is for garden waste, which is sent off to be composted. Garden waste is collected in wheeled bins, which you can hire, or by purchasing large paper sacks.

Both services are fortnightly, and help increase the amount recycled in the area.

Kerbside Recycling Service

The kerbside recycling service covers the vast majority of Sedgemoor households and involves residents placing recyclable material listed below into a green kerbside recycling box, which is supplied by Sedgemoor District Council.

What is collected?

  • Paper;
  • Glass Bottles & Jars;
  • Aluminium & Steel Cans;
  • Aluminium Foil;
  • Clothing - Please place in a separate plastic bag to keep it dry and don't put clothes out on wet days;
  • Pairs of shoes - please tie in pairs;
  • Car batteries - place adjacent to your box.

Paper items that can be recycled are newspapers, brochures, catalogues, junk mail, magazines, yellow pages and phone directories.

Please wash and squash cans before placing in the kerbside box.

Please separate your recyclable materials, for example, by using old carrier bags, this helps the collectors as everything is sorted at the kerbside. If your recyclables won't all fit in to your box bag and place them next to your box for collection (to avoid confusion do not use black refuse sacks for this).

When is it collected?
The kerbside boxes are collected fortnightly on the same day as your weekly refuse collection. householders are requested that they place their box out by 7.00am on collection day. Please leave your box by the edge of your property near the pavement, where it can easily be seen by the collector.

Click here to email to request for a collection calendar.

Not got a kerbside box?
If you have not got a kerbside recycling box, or have lost the one you had, please click here or email to request your box and help the Council reach the recycling targets.

Garden Waste Collection Service

Households have the opportunity to hire a wheeled bin, or buy large paper sacks for garden waste, which will then be sent off to be composted locally.

When is it collected?
The wheeled bins and paper sacks are collected fortnightly. When you hire a wheeled bin or buy paper sacks you will be provided with a calendar with your collection dates on.

How much will the garden waste service cost?
From April 1st 2010 - £35 per year to hire the bin or £20 for 10 paper sacks.

How do I order a garden waste bin?
Contact Sedgemoor District Council on 0845 408 2543 or email.

What do I do with anything left over?

Once you have separated your recycling for collection you might think about whether any of the other materials can be recycled.  For example recycling banks can often take plastic bottles and cardboard and Household Waste Recycling Centres take a range of materials (click here for details).  Anything left over should be securely tied in black plastic sacks.  If the items do not fit in a plastic sack, for example large cardboard boxes, please make sure they are as easy as possible to collect and will not create litter (cardboard boxes should be flattened and either bound together or placed under sacks so they cannot be blown away by the wind).  Some items are too big to be collected at the kerbside, so should either be taken to Household Waste Recycling Centres, or you should arrange a “bulky waste” collection (click here for details).

Accepted in your kersbide refuse collection:

Not accepted:

  • Recyclable materials taken with your recycling collections
  • Garden waste
  • Hot ash
  • Rubble, earth and stone
  • Hypodermics/sharps and clinical waste
  • Bulky household items like furniture
  • Engine oil, paint or other chemicals
  • Trade or commercial waste
