Mendip
Within Mendip there are three main recycling collection services, and one collection service for general refuse. One recycling collection is for the 'dry' recyclable material (cans, paper etc), via a kerbside recycling box; the second is for the collection of food waste; the third is the collection of garden waste, which is sent off to be composted locally.

Kerbside Recycling Service |

The kerbside recycling service covers the vast majority of Mendip households and involves residents placing recyclable material listed below into a black kerbside recycling box, which is supplied by Mendip District Council. |

What is collected?
- Paper;
- Glass Bottles & Jars;
- Aluminium & Steel Cans;
- Aluminium Foil
- Clothing - Please place in a separate plastic bag to keep it dry and don't put clothes out on wet days;
- Pairs of shoes - please tie in pairs;
- Car batteries - place adjacent to your box.
Paper items that can be recycled are newspapers, brochures, catalogues, junk mail, magazines, yellow pages and phone directories.
Please wash and squash cans before placing in the kerbside box.
Please separate your recyclable materials by using old carrier bags, this helps the collectors as everything is sorted at the kerbside. If your recyclables won't all fit in to your box place them next to your box for collection.
When is it collected?
The kerbside boxes are collected weekly on the same day as your fortnightly kerbside recycling collection. Householders are requested that they place their box out by 7.00am on collection day. Please leave your box by the edge of your property near the pavement, where it can easily be seen by the collector.

Food Waste Collection Service |

Food waste forms 28% of the average Somerset householder’s bin waste by weight and can make a significant difference in increasing the level of recycling.
Food waste can be composted but unlike garden waste, food waste must be specially treated and therefore it is collected separately.
Residents on the SORT IT! scheme have been provided with two food waste containers – one for a weekly food waste collection and a smaller kitchen caddy to collect food waste each day and transfer to the collection container when convenient.
Food waste containers can be easily locked. The lid is secure when the handle is positioned at the front of the container. To open the lid, push the handle to the rear of the container. Residents are asked to lock the lid when presenting the food waste container on collection day. |

How can I keep my food waste container clean?
You can use newspaper to wrap food waste or line the caddies.You can also purchase compostable liners from local shops. These must be certified for composting and be printed with the 'looped seedling' logo shown. Please click here for a list of shops selling SWP compostable liners - or by ringing the Help Line on 01749 648999.
Please do NOT line your food waste bins with plastic bags, even if they are biodegradable as these do not rot down in the composting process and we will be unable to collect your food waste. Only compostable liners with the 'looped seedling' certification logo can be used.

Garden Waste Collection Service |

Households will have the opportunity to hire a wheeled bin, or buy large paper sacks for garden waste, which will then be sent off to be composted locally.

When is it collected?
The brown wheeled bins and paper sacks are collected fortnightly on the same day as the kerbside recycling box, and on altnerate weeks to the refuse wheeled bin. When you hire a wheeled bin or buy paper sacks you will be provided with a calendar with your collection dates on.
How much will the garden waste service cost?
£25 per year to hire the bin or £10 for 10 paper sacks.

How is it collected?
For the majority of households, general refuse is collected via wheeled bins; however, for those households or residents that are unsuitable - such as flats or the elderly - they can use sacks, but only put out four sacks a fortnight.
