Lighting the way towards recycling!

How you can recycle your long life light bulbs

With long life, low energy light bulbs becoming the norm in houses nowadays, the Somerset Waste Partnership is reminding people that when they eventually do need replacing, the old ones can be recycled at the Household Waste Recycling Centres throughout the County.

Take them to your local Household Waste Recycling Centre

There are recycling containers for waste electrical items and fluorescent tubes, including low energy light bulbs, at all 18 Household Waste Recycling Centres in Somerset.

The collected bulbs are taken away to a plant in Huddersfield to be recycled.

Save energy and money

Long life bulbs use up to 80 per cent less electricity than a standard bulb, but produce the same amount of light.

They have the double impact of saving money as well as energy, helping in the fight against climate change.

Cllr Hazel Prior-Sankey, Vice Chair of the Somerset Waste Partnership said:

“These types of light bulbs are becoming more and more popular, and traditional bulbs will soon be phased out, so we have provided residents with a recycling facility at the Household Waste Recycling Centres.

The energy saving bulbs contain low levels of mercury, like all fluorescent tubes so it is important that they are recycled rather than sent to landfill.

As with all electrical equipment the producers have a responsibility to ensure these bulbs are recycled, and we expect to see more retailers offering take back schemes in store for these products”.

The recycling process

The long life bulbs are recycled by Lamp Care in Essex.  The bulbs go through a specialised process which separates the parts of the bulb (this is mainly glass and metal) for recycling.  The mercury is then safely treated using carbon filters.
